Laura F @russellbustle 3 days ago A bookish musician/writer and a bookish musician/rugby star become roommates at an Irish boarding school. They didn’t want to be roommates. They didn’t want to know each other at all. But “Handsome Devil” happily ignores what Ned Roche (Fionn O’Shea) and Conor Masters (Nicholas Galitzine) want. Instead, the two gay teens stumble into an important friendship. The individual growth of the central characters gives the whole of “Handsome Devil” a dignified power, balanced by dry wit at frequent measure. Galitzine and O’Shea work the entire range with ease. So does Andrew Scott as English teacher Don Sherry. No surprise that “Handsome Devil” won Best Film at the 2017 Dublin International Film Festival. It took Sherry’s best advice: don’t speak in a borrowed voice. But the sincerity of the performances more than compensates. Handsome Devil doesn't need grand speeches or dramatic twists to make its point. Its greatest strength is its warmth. It's funny, heartfelt, and ultimately hopeful without pretending that acceptance is always easy. "Reveal to them who you are, if you dare." Verdict: A charming and genuinely affecting coming-of-age story about friendship, identity, and refusing to let other people's expectations define you. Handsome Devil is sweet without being saccharine—and absolutely worth seeking out. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Aug 6, 2026 Nicholas Galitzine delivers a solid performance in Handsome Devil, bringing depth and sincerity to a character-driven story. His chemistry with Fionn O’Shea is one of the film’s strongest elements, helping the movie maintain its emotional weight even when the screenplay struggles. The biggest issue with Handsome Devil is that it can feel overly dependent on dialogue, with some scenes becoming repetitive and the pacing slowing down. The film has an important message, but there are moments where the narrative feels uncertain about how to move forward. It never becomes overwhelming, but it does leave the viewer questioning some choices made throughout the story. Overall, Handsome Devil is a decent one-time watch with good performances and meaningful themes, but it lacks consistency needed to become truly memorable. It is worth seeing for fans of Nicholas Galitzine or those interested in his earlier work, but it is unlikely to become a film many viewers revisit. I wished things had turned out as good as this film did for the protagonist for me. See more John S @RT40486670 Jan 16, 2025 Andrew Scott steals everything he's in. Just saying.
