Critics Consensus

A funnier follow-up with a sci-fi bent, Happy Death Day 2U isn't as fiendishly fresh as its predecessor, but fans of the original may still find this a sequel worth celebrating.

Happy Death Day 2U, more importantly, never loses sight of its secret weapon: Rothe, who rolls with every punch this film throws at her.

This film is basically just ridiculous nonsense. I had a ton of fun.

Along the lines of other recent inexpensive genre efforts that behave more like franchise blockbusters by building out their lore and doubling down on their nerdiness.

If you liked the first one, you will still like this one. Very light horror, so if you are going for a slasher, you might be disappointed.

I don’t regret the time I invested on Happy Death Day 2U; I had fairly average expectations and the film met them well. Amidst a flood of mediocre horror movie sequels, that alone is a welcome treat.

We all loved our characters from the first film, but following them for another time loop is hard. We get a few more fun kills for Tree but don't gain much else with this one.

It was ok, but I expected a thriller not a comedy. It was a little too sci fi.

good addition to the first one without being nonsensical, it had a surprise to it although predictable and repetitive at times, but it holds up pretty well. Overall a decent sequel, felt entertaining watching it together with part 1.

While I commend the sequel for being more bold with its sci-fi mechanics this time around, it also gives us a messier film than the first. But Jessica Rothe keeps this film afloat with a dynamic performance rarely seen in this genre. She really gets to do a bit of everything here, showcasing not only her ScreamQueen abilities and comedic timing, but also some serious emotional chops with one scene in particular and even becomes kind of an action heroine during the climax. She commits to every bit of this film and seriously elevates an ambitious but flawed screenplay.
