Jonathan K @aFIREintheattic Aug 22, 2026 Excellent characters and an excellent performance by the lead, Philip Baker Hall. It's very subdued and has kind of a mesmerizing pace, very moody. The characters are rich and developed well, and the story is interesting in that very PTA way. It pays off nicely because you're wandering through the first two thirds of it not having all the information yet, you know something's a little off, and in the end it's pretty satisfying. Really liked some of the music too. There's this harpsichord-like instrument around the end of the second or third act, that's really interesting in particular. It's a notable film for its mood and dream-like, mesmerizing pacing, and really deliberate dialogue and characters. Cool movie with a cool vibe. Thought the last 45 minutes are slow and predictable and provide the usual Hollywood happy ending. The music score is non existent the acting is better than the storyline. Yea, Id watch it again though the movie leaves you hanging the last 45 minutes with a hurried Hollywood happy ending. Worth watching could have been much better had the ending more planned and not as hurried. If it leaves you disappointed and wanting more of Las Vegas you could always watch Showgirls that also has a similar Vegas feel yet a better ending See more Teddy S @Teddy_S Aug 10, 2026 Bizarrely overrated film. The main problem is the characters, who are thinly drawn and unbelievable. The dialogue isn't terrible, but the main character's lines often feel clunky and unnatural. The direction is solid and the actors are good enough to make the film entertaining and watchable despite the weak writing. The overall conceit is dumb and the ending egregiously so. Could have been really good with a better script. Nevertheless, it's worth a watch. See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Jun 27, 2026 Despite this being our fourth viewing, we enjoyed it more than ever. The acting and story were a treat, of course, but this time I noticed how well everything else worked too. The cinematography is rich and confident, with long, steady pans and deep Las Vegas colors. The Hammond organ music was just right, a subtle, odd touch that somehow fit perfectly. The print may not have been 4K, but it looked and sounded great in our home theater. This movie is perfect mid 90’s update on 1940’s noir. The casting was perfect and the story line evokes a feeling with almost spiritual overtones. What a fantastic take off for one of the most masterful directors of American cinema today. See more John F @RT84127024 Apr 8, 2026 Certainly not PTA's best work but a lot to like here, especially for the character arc of Sydney. Perhaps it was the writing but otherwise the performances of the supporting cast was less than outstanding, especially Reilly who is miscast here. See more Read all reviews
