There are moments when Heart of the Beast comes close to the familiar conventions of the survival genre, and some of its threats are more predictable than others. But the film’s sincerity is difficult to resist.

There are shades of Inarritu’s The Revenant in it, but it’s not nearly as searching or profound. There’s not much to the story, it’s not psychologically complex.

Credit Ayer, Alexander, Pitt and Odin for delivering so much more, a genuinely moving experience that speaks to the special connection that can exist between man and beast and the immeasurable impact that can have on our lives.

The physical set pieces have genuine force, and the encounters with wild animals provide several tense moments. The wilderness consistently feels like a formidable opponent.
