See more Zach W. @zwreviews Jan 19 Though the premise seemed like something I would really enjoy, I found myself completely disappointed with Hedda. Tessa Thompson and Nina Hoss are riveting at times throughout Hedda, but I never quite felt sold with the film’s story as a whole. The pace is extremely off as I was genuinely struggling to stay awake while watching this film at times. Regardless, the production design is intriguing and the depth of characterizations make for a story with weight. Directed by Nia DaCosta, Hedda is a reimagined adaptation of the nineteenth century play from Henrik Ibsen. The story introduces several characters but nearly none of them are genuinely interesting except for Thompson. Nina Hoss delivers the most memorable performance of the film because of her character’s shocking moments rather than the range of her acting. That being said, Hedda does facilitate moments of a mystery that I enjoyed despite the boring pace and unnecessarily complex storyline. Overall, Hedda was a missed opportunity to capture a story that successfully challenges the audience to understand character motivations, dynamic, and relationships. Tessa Thompson is very talented but even her character seemed muted at times. See more Wayne M Jan 9 Hedda is a complex and interesting film. It is stately and worldly, but I think it also feels a little too self-contained at times. This film is an adaptation of the classic Ibsen play Hedda Gabler. This film is set in England in the 1950s with some different gender roles. Hedda is married to George, and they live on a luxurious English estate. But George, an academic, is debt ridden and Hedda seeks more opportunity for him. At a lavish party we see Hedda cross paths with Eileen, a former lover, who is competing with George for the same professorship. So, over a day the situation grows stickier and more complex. The film is delightful in its conversations, and the interplay is lovely, but it also at times felt a little too stuffy and contrived. The cast is great though, with Tessa Thompson shining as Hedda. Nina Hoss and Imogen Poots are also great. A fine and considered film that doesn't quite soar.
