Critics Consensus

Hereditary uses its classic setup as the framework for a harrowing, uncommonly unsettling horror film whose cold touch lingers long beyond the closing credits.

Toni Collette delivers a soul-shattering performance in Hereditary that reminds us how much sacrifice parenthood is and how deeply parents can scar their children, utterly beyond repair. Go to Full Review

The build in tension, the crumbling family relationships, the fact that you can see and understand every major character’s point of view even though they are wildly conflicting – this movie is a high water mark in horror and for cinema in general. Go to Full Review

Hereditary is insane without being absurd or campy, or calculated in its provocation. Is it a masterpiece? I think it is. Go to Full Review

joanietails Oct 18, 2025 The GREATEST horror film of all time. Yes I said it. Toni Collette was robbed of an Oscar win that year. She and the film shouldve both been nominated, but we know the genre doesnt get proper respect. The full casts acting was outstanding. Great cinematography and score. Blows Rosemarys Baby and The Exorcist out of the water. Ari Astor is a new master of horror. See his film Midsommar as well. Top notch film making. I've watched it 5 times See more Brandon Dec 1, 2022 As neutral a view of the accident as can be See more John T @BarRescueCrew 16 hrs ago Kind of two mini movies in one. 1 hour of set up and 1 hour of payoff. I loved the cinematography, all the actors were excellent, script was perfectly acceptable and the movie "atmosphere" was unsettling with a good payoff. But it either needed to be more unsettling or more fantastical to be scarier, it was just missing that final gear to make it truly spooky. I never got that like flush of adrenaline that some movies can elicit. Worth a watch for sure. See more Benjamin G @BxDxGx 1 day ago You know, a lot of people online keep perpetuating that this film is one of the top of the line scariest of them all right now — it does have its moments more towards the end but I’ve definitely seen scarier. It wasn’t until the final scene when I realized that I had already watched this film before and completely forgot about it, which naturally implies that it’s not even that memorable of a film. It is shot well and builds up well to its climatic ending but frankly I kind of tire of occult / supernatural films unless there’s more of an obvious shtick about it like "Obsession." Movies like "The Descent" and "Event Horizon" seem more scary to me. Still entertaining for its genre, something hanging out in the ceiling corner of a dark room will always be creepy in my book.
