When bratty 8-year-old Kevin McCallister acts out the night before a family trip to Paris, his mother makes him sleep in the attic. After the McCallisters mistakenly leave for the airport without Kevin, he awakens to an empty house and assumes his wish to have no family has come true. But his excitement sours when he realizes that two con men plan to rob the McCallister residence, and that he alone must protect the family home.

Formulaically implausible in undergoing a childish sense of melodrama, this is a Christmas classic for a reason over its charming apparatus brightening the yuletide delight with a heart showing familial importance through Culkin’s iconically and vocally innocent game performance to catapult this to its hilarious punchline. (B+)

A movie that deserves significantly more credit than I ever gave it back when it was released. Macaulay Culkin is pretty incredible despite his young age, and Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are hilarious as the cartoonish Wet Bandits. A John Huges movie through and through, this one has become one of my Christmas classics.
