When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman) middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

Critics Consensus

The look of Hook is lively indeed but Steven Spielberg directs on autopilot here, giving in too quickly to his sentimental, syrupy qualities.

It's not fair to kids. With all his technical flair, Spielberg has created the equivalent of the 70-year-old with dyed hair, troweled makeup, in tie-dyes and high tops. And in doing that, messed with Neverland. Spielberg is old enough to know better.

Spielberg does to us precisely what he does to Peter Banning -- he engineers a return to our childhoods, to experiences both pleasurable and painful.

The result is his most sentimental film, because unlike E.T. it refuses to take up residence within a child's mind, preferring to stay outside and fantasise about it. Condescension is no way to treat a fable.

It is as clear an example of American cinematic know-how, lush extravagance, culture and cultural imperialism as you're ever likely to see.

A fun and entertaining film despite its long runtime and tight set design

This is such a classic family film, it updates the classic Peter Pan story with a modern twist that speaks to all grown ups about finding the fun in life again. The acting is spot on, the cast is fantastic, not a wasted minute, and Robin Williams in one of his best roles. This has only improved with age and is a Christmas staple in my house.

Horrible movie. Good premise, but horrible execution. At least 90 minutes too long. So boring. Volume keeps changing from too loud to so soft that it is incomprehensible.

How do you get to be a movie critic on this god forsaken app? How does Hook have a lower rating than all the other live action Peter Pan movies? The 2023 one? Horrendous in every way. Compared to Hook? Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Stephen Spielberg, John Williams. Enough said. The others are daytime TV movies in comparison. For a live action kids movie, Hook is top tier.

Once past the cynicism and old age of the actors, it is an interesting "what if" Pete Pan did choose love over Neverland. And then growing up, but having to face someone who took his children. It is a silly and simplistic view of parenting while being a busy executive. However, it focuses on fatherhood and "believing."
