Critics Consensus

While Ang Lee's ambitious film earns marks for style and an attempt at dramatic depth, there's ultimately too much talking and not enough smashing.

Lee’s take on Bruce Banner — the scientist you won’t like when he’s angry (played by Eric Bana) — stands up rather well as a counterpoint to today’s CGI-drenched behemoths.

I ask you: Is this not the correct way, the honorable way, for a studio to spend $150 million of its summer capital? Universal said The Hulk, and Lee heard something else, perhaps a story of dysfunctional families torn apart by ambition.

Even if Lee would have wanted to rise above the simple two-dimensional universe of the comic books, his portrayal remains just as flat.

The film's artistic ambition, psychological explorations, and fun action get largely lost in its unnecessarily long runtime and unconventional editing style.

For audiences ever fatigued by superhero movies cranked out like fast food, Hulk tastes like gourmet cuisine. Time has been kind to Hulk. Today, a movie often cited as one of the worst of its genre plays a lot more like one of the best.

Hulk has long been a misunderstood film but it's a very different type of comic book movie and should be reappraised as such.

I liked the way the movie references comic panels. The movie is entertaining, but nothing more. Hulk's visual makes him look like plastic (though I liked it). The plot is mediocre to say it's best. But the soundtrack and effects saves it. It's not meant to be taken much seriously, as it's not even canonical to the MCU.

Ang Lee's Hulk is a terribly underrated movie that's not afraid to be hated and deals with editing and visuals with a beautiful sense of anarchy. The lack of smashing is probably the most faithful and respectful thing one can do when adapting Hulk to the big screen, and this is the only time where we've seen Banner's internal struggle represented perfectly. Everything is represented and shot slowly, calmly, sometimes even with a looming sense of dread and sadness, and that's probably why the movie feels so paradoxical. If you're looking for brainless destruction, watch the 2008 one. A must watch for fans of the Hulk, and a well crafted, very particular and weird movie that deserves recognition.
