Critics Consensus

Led by strong work from Margot Robbie and Alison Janney, I, Tonya finds the humor in its real-life story without losing sight of its more tragic -- and emotionally resonant -- elements.

How much Harding knew or didn't know about the attack on Kerrigan is somewhat secondary, if that can be believed.

Gillespie has imbued his film with black humour, while never undermining the authenticity of the characters or detracting from the abuse that runs through the story.

[Allison Janney's] undiluted unsentimentality is the perfect compliment for a sporting underdog movie that disobeys the rules.

Great performances, whip smart editing, savvy fourth wall breaking and one hell of a soundtrack make a star of Robbie and confirm Gillespie is an incredibly exciting director

Craig Gillespie’s ambitious direction and self-awareness made I, Tonya a refreshing and hysterical look at Tonya Harding’s life and what drove the events of her downfall.

Brimming with depravity and teaming with talent, "I, Tonya" may be the brashest film you will see seen this year and, quite frankly, one of the downright best as well.

I Tonya was a contender for a gold medal but her husband hit Nancy Kerrington in the knee. This is a *4.5* star movie!

I, Tonya is a gloriously messy, darkly funny gut-punch of a movie. The writing is sharp, irreverent, and constantly playing with the line between truth and the stories people tell themselves. It takes a familiar scandal and turns it into something surprisingly human, letting its characters be awful, vulnerable, hilarious, and heartbreaking all at once. It’s funny until it suddenly isn’t, and that emotional whiplash is exactly what makes it so damn good. An absolute knockout.

I, Tonya feels like someone threw a sports movie, a tabloid headline, and a family reunion from hell into a blender, then somehow made it brilliant. It's hilarious, chaotic, and surprisingly heartfelt beneath all the flying insults and spectacularly bad decisions. Every character seems convinced they're the reasonable one, which only makes the ride funnier. By the end, you're laughing, wincing, and wondering how reality ever managed to outdo fiction.

Margot Robbie doesn't ask you to forgive Tonya Harding. She dares you to stop reducing her to a punchline. The movie understands that every villain is somebody else's daughter, every headline is a paper shredder, and every joke has a mortgage. The brilliance is that everyone gets to tell the truth, which is another way of saying everyone gets to lie with absolute confidence. Memory isn't a witness. It's a publicist with a drinking problem. It's viciously funny because life usually is. Nobody wakes up hoping to become a cautionary tale. They wake up trying to pay bills, impress impossible people, and survive another day without breaking something that won't heal. Underneath the sequins, cigarettes, and spectacularly bad decisions is a bruised little heartbeat refusing to quit. That's the real victory. Not the medals. Not the scandal. Just the stubborn refusal to let the world have the last laugh.
