When Mordecai, a Holocaust survivor, portrayed by Academy Award Nominee Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans, Ordinary People) is given a new iPhone, an unexpected series of events upends his world. A heartwarming Miami-set comedy based on a true story. Co-starring Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Rudy) and Academy Award Nominee Carol Kane (Taxi, Hester Street).

In the title role, Hirsch schmears it on a little thick and schticky, while Astin largely looks irritated. In an underwritten part, Carol Kane maximizes every half-smile and gesture, bringing warmth and sly humor.

The best parts of “iMordecai” are Hirsch and Kane, both committing to their sometimes overwritten characters and embodying the movie’s message — that you’re never too old to live a full life — better than the script and direction do.

The disjointed comedy/drama iMordecai is based on a true story, but this dull movie looks more like fragmented segments of a very phony sitcom. Even with the talents of Judd Hirsch and Carol Kane, iMordecai is undone by misguided filmmaking.

iMordecai is a loving tribute to family, friendship, always evolving and, of course, South Florida.

I’ll spare you the litany of the many truly awful films wrought under similar circumstances, but Samel — who says he studied filmmaking by watching online Master Classes — has birthed a lovingly crafted, sweetly nuanced tale of familial love.

I Mordecai was a very warm, relatable film. It was charming, with a lot of varying emotion throughout, Judd Hirsch was wonderful as Mordecai and as his brother "Martin."

It was poignant and sad at times, but you can tell the family and friends really care about each other. The ending was a happy one.

Heartwarming, funny in spots, always entertaining. Some stellar performances and fine direction. Mordecai is a real character - in every sense of the word - brought to life by Judd Hirsch and director-writer Samel. Carol Kane endearing, Sean Astin authentically loving and put upon. Thumbs up!
