See more Alain E @AlainE 10/25/2024 This is a graphic novel futuristic movie that retains its entertaining value 40 years after its release and Fassbinder’s death. The hero is a chain smoking police detective dressed in a leopard patterned civilian suit. Thankfully the images are restored and we can appreciate the colors, angles and illumination. Our attention is sustained except maybe five, ten minutes before the end. Then, there is an ingenious finale with the hero having a sexual encounter with Neil Armstrong’s image on the moon as Richard Nixon delivers a speech. So, not a remake of the Maltese Falcon. If anarchism in movie making is not your thing, stay away. See more 11/05/2019 A movie worth seeing for none other that three main reasons: The absurdist exercise in retrofuturism. The drunkenly charming performance of Fassbinder. The colorful anarchism of a production design that rewrites all the rules of what was then known as cyberpunk. The movie with his unbridled and convoluted plot owes way more to William Burroughs than William Gibson. The satire, in this unique cinematographic experience is more a direction chosen by director Wolf Gremm, than a clearly defined series of remarks that one can extract or decipher in the script. It is certainly witty and doesn't take itself seriously but you will hardly find any classically intended humour in the short and surreal lines of the actors. However this is the true strength of the movie and what allows it, to stand the test of time.
