David K @RT61474040 Jul 28 As others have noted, the weak point really is Robert Taylor's performance. Not only is it one-note, everyone else in the film speaks with a British accent, but not Sir Robert. We live in a world where actors are required to offer a reasonable facsimile of an accent. In fact, many of the best spend weeks, if not months, honing one with speech coaches. Too bad that wasn't true in earlier Hollywood. The film (and Taylor's others in this trio of films [Ivanhoe, Quentin Durward]) suffers for it. A fine example of the expediency of old Hollywood taking priority over realism. It has lackluster sets and subpar action that leads a two hour runtime with not much to show for it. Many other epics have been made from the story to better effect such as Monty Python and The Holy Grail, Robin hood 1939, The Unidentified Flying Odd Ball, Etc, Go watch those. They form the knights of the roundtable and are unmatched. As they begin to seem unbreakable, scandals within the walls of the castle opens a crack enemies will try to exploit. "Who is it?" "Death...awaiting on the stairs." Richard Thorpe, director of Jailhouse Rock, Ivanhoe, Vengeance Valley, The Golden Head, The Prodigal, Killers of Kilimanjaro, Athena, and Carbine Williams, delivers Knights of the Round Table. The storyline for this picture was fun and has some great action scenes. I loved the script as well as the acting. The cast includes Robert Taylor, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer, and Stanley Baker. "I thank you for the help I did not need." I came across this on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and had to DVR it. I generally enjoy movies in this genre and this was fairly well done.
