Critics Consensus

Likable leads, terrific behind-the-scenes talent, and an intriguing musical hook aren't enough to save Last Christmas from its poorly conceived story.

Last Christmas [is] about 75 percent of the way towards being a great movie. And while that’s not the worst crime in the world, it is the sentiment that’s left the rom-com genre struggling to thrive outside of streaming since the pandemic.

Still, it's worth a visit to the multiplex to behold cinematographer John Schwartzman (National Treasure: Book of Secrets, The Founder) accept the challenge of illuminating a feature almost entirely by Christmas lights.

Last Christmas leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy – as any good Christmas film should. But despite what the marketing may imply, it’s not the rom-com you may expect, and does offer some tinsel covered head-scratching moments.

Absolutely loved this film with a surprise ending. Emilies character is a redeemable yet lovable mess, and Henry Goldings character is magical. They both just light up the screen.
