John B @johnbalash Jul 13 When I was young I remember the outrage surrounding this movie but it’s far more reverential than I imagined. David Bowie as Pontius Pilate?! This movie has it all (except actors of color portraying non-white people). It’s quite weird, gory, and filled with nudity, but so is much of what happens in The Bible. It’s certainly an interesting take on a well known story. Love that the Jesus and Judas actors both starred in movies with Madonna (who vied for the role of Mary Magdalene in this movie). See more S. The film explores sin, doubt, temptation, and moral conflict through a vulnerable Christ, portrayed convincingly by Willem Dafoe, yet I never fully connected with him or the film’s message. Its insistence on love and faith as universal answers felt difficult to accept from my agnostic perspective, creating a constant emotional barrier. Visually, the muted colors, functional lighting, and slow pacing resulted in monotony rather than atmosphere. Still, I appreciate the film’s willingness to focus on the internal struggle of an individual burdened by something greater than himself. It is bold, thoughtful, and valuable — just not emotionally resonant for me. Scorsese goes against type with this film for sure but his usual gangster flicks are better.
