Lorenzo G @garofalo_lor 2d Agnès Varda’s 1964 masterpiece, Le Bonheur, presents love as a beautiful yet terrifyingly mysterious force. Though the plot is minimal, the film’s slow-acting brilliance lies in its subtle observations of domestic life. The repetitive labor of the wives suggests a subtle feminist critique, echoing sociological concepts of the "second shift" decades before they were named. However, the film is primarily a chilling study of François, a man whose psychological instability is masked by the banality of his routine. His lack of mourning and his manipulative presence are left unexplained, as Varda offers a tragedy without a psychological autopsy. It is a visually simple work that remains as inscrutable and unsettling as the emotion it explores. See more Read all reviews
