Gibson brings a wild, unhinged, yet deeply sympathetic edge to Martin Riggs—a suicidal officer grieving his wife—while Glover provides the perfect grounded counterweight as a family man nearing retirement. Mel Gibson brings wild, reckless, self-destructive energy, while Danny Glover grounds the film with exhaustion, decency, and reluctant patience. Their contrast gives the action real emotional weight as their friendship slowly forms. Riggs also works because he is not just a loose-cannon cop for fun. His grief, depression, and death wish make his recklessness feel dangerous before it ever feels cool. Richard Donner balances that darkness with family comedy, buddy-cop banter, shootouts, chases, and explosions. Gary Busey is a strong physical threat as Mr. Joshua, giving the movie a cold, brutal villain presence and a personal final fight. "Lethal Weapon" (1987) is a great action film, where action itself is not front and center, but rather characters. Brilliantly directed by the late great Richard Donner "Lethal Weapon" puts two detectives in the center of of the film. Acting by Mel Gibson and Danny Glover was phenomenal here. They both have great chemistry together and with excellent writing by Shane Black this film is more about the characters and their interactions rather than pure action itself. Sound design, editing, cinematography, special effects are all top notch here. Revisiting this classic in 2026 on newly remastered 4K UHD was a blast from a past and confirms me one thing - they don't make movies like this anymore. Great movie.
