A newly-single father's efforts to weather the turbulence of change -- in his life and in the world around him -- while a new immigrant endeavors to find her place in a foreign land. Set in 1971 rural Australia, it is portrait of a country at a turning point and the human desire for connection.

Wilson handles this quietly touching material with a deft hand, with the little mixed-race community providing a convincing backdrop to the small-scale drama.

While Little Tornadoes is far from light viewing, there’s an elegance in its construction that makes it accessible, even pleasurable, to watch.

Extremely handsome-looking, with an excellent sense of time and place. But it's missing the dramatic propulsion required to power it through even its short 90-minute runtime.

Yet another timid Australian drama that is so afraid to state anything plainly that it almost forgets to say anything at all.

Director Aaron Wilson brings a delicate hand to his heartfelt, sombre domestic drama. Along with the finely judged use of close-ups and wide shots he does a great job softly illuminating the period detail sprinkled across almost every frame of the film.

Overall, I enjoyed the touching and heartfelt story about a family dealing with a huge and unexpected life change. I also adored the visuals, and many moments shine wonderfully, such as landscapes, various sceneries, and dramatic moments of characters sharing a conversation or moments with little to no spoken words. Performances, for the most part, are great too. My biggest disappointment with the film is the unmemorable instrumental soundtrack, and the story itself has its moments where it feels slow. As an Australian film, it still has many aspects that are quite impressive and most certainly will be enjoyed by many cinephiles.

Excellent portrayal of Australian masculine culture in rural Australia. An excellent study of communication and the history of trauma on relationships and how people interact.
