Critics Consensus

Live Free or Die Hard may be preposterous, but it's an efficient, action-packed summer popcorn flick with thrilling stunts and a commanding performance by Bruce Willis. Fans of the previous Die Hard films will not be disappointed.

But ultimately it's [Bruce] Willis who makes this loopy action movie so endearing...Nobody dies it better.

Though it's mostly entertaining (if overlong), there is a sense that the whole thing has become somewhat rote.

Even though NYPD Det. John McClane doesn’t always feel like the McClane we know and love, director Len Wiseman does such a wonderful job orchestrating bravado shootouts, fights, and chases that our most basic entertainment needs are met.

This worthy addition to the Die Hard franchise sticks to a refreshingly old-fashioned (but no less effective) action formula throughout.

Live Free or Die Hard has plenty to like because Bruce Willis still brings enough sarcasm, toughness, and stubbornness to make John McClane recognizable. Even when the movie pushes him into bigger, more exaggerated action, Willis keeps some of the old McClane attitude intact. Justin Long works well as Matt Farrell, giving the movie a nervous tech-world contrast to McClane’s old-school instincts. Their buddy-action rhythm is one of the stronger parts of the film. The cyberterrorism "fire sale" premise is also a smart modernization, giving McClane a threat he cannot just punch his way through. The apartment attack, tunnel sequence, and helicopter/car stunt are big, entertaining action beats. The problem is that McClane survives so much that he starts feeling more like a superhero than the vulnerable everyman of the original. It is fun, but far less grounded.

Everything you want out of the franchise. Hacker villains feels a little thin but natural for the time. Liked Long and Willis together.
