Critics Consensus

Smart, sharp-witted, and fueled by enjoyably over-the-top action, The Long Kiss Goodnight makes up in impact what it lacks in consistent aim.

Frankly, if I had to see either Harlin-Davis movie again, I'd opt for the klutzy unpleasantness of Cutthroat Island over the efficient if equally stupid unpleasantness of this 1996 release.

Like the heroine, the movie has two personalities that smartly coexist.

The Long Kiss Goodnight quite literally reveals that our past will eventually catch up with us. It also unsentimentally examines the pain and mess of the afterbirth that accompanies becoming a new person.

...what makes the film soar—and it does, often—are the performances led by an absolutely commanding Davis. Jackson is no slouch either. This is one of his best turns.

This is almost a poster child for mediocre mid-90s action cinema.

I have no idea why, but this is one of my go to movies. I think it’s brilliant fun and I’ve watched it many many times. Pretty unique and a very entertaining hour and a half.

Greetings from Lithuania. "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996) is a very entertaining movie that is excellently made. In liked this movie back in the day, and liked even more in 2026 upon rewatching it on 4K UHD release by Arrow Video which is pretty amazing. Picture quality is excellent, sound in Dolby Atmos is really great. This is a must own version of this excellent action film from the 90's. Directed by Renny Harlin and staring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson this is a fun, entertaining and silly action film that kind of was a bit ahead of its time. It flopped at the box office yet later found its audience at home. Overall, "The Long Kiss Goodnight" an excellent fun ride.
