weasel R @weaselsrule Sep 21, 2026 Saw it when it came out and wondered what all they hype was about, back then I'd give it a 'C'. Just rewatched it as it was on TV - found it to be contrived, predictable, trite and very unsatisfying - the editing is terrible, Ali is way too pretentious to be likeable, Ryan is 'ok' but nothing to rave about, the storylike is drab and the ending is nothing that would be considered unique or special. It was a chore rewatching it but I felt the need as I hadn't seen it in 50 years and wondered how it well it held up. Answer: Not very good. See more Dr. Sina W @RT65098475 Jul 23, 2026 There are films that don't age well. This is one of them. Nothing in this film is romantic or interesting. Not even the acting. It doesn't even work as time document. I wanted to know what this film actually was all about - and couldn't even make it to the end... See more Forrest M @RT32281296 Jun 29, 2026 "Love Story" tells the story of romance between the rich aristocrat Oliver Barrett IV and a middle-class Jennifer Cavelleri. In it we get to see cliched themes. The death of Jenny from cancer was used for emotional manipulation for the viewers to feel sorry for their romance in the end as well as to basically cheer for basically an uninteresting lovers Oliver and Jenny. It was an overhyped film that unknowingly promotes cancer more than than romance. See more Jacob B @RT89309114 Feb 11, 2025 It certainly has its moments of cheesiness and melodrama (as iconic as it is, "love means never having to say you're sorry" is a bit eyeroll-inducing; it does slightly work better in its original context here but the more you think about it, the more of a "I'm 14 and this is deep" vibe it has to it) but the strong performances, memorable theme tune, witty dialogue exchanges during the happier days of these two young lovebirds' romance and good direction make some of Love Story's more trite aspects easier to swallow resulting in a good, albeit outdated, romantic drama. See more katie w @RT78633317 Feb 10, 2025 Such a tear jerker. I loved it then and I love it now. Absolutely beautiful especially when you lose a loved one at 24. It's somehow comforting through all the pain. Anyone who doesn't love this was never a real preppy See more Ron R @RT76285883 Oct 9, 2024 In some ways a romantic story worthy of the title. But the overall quirkiness of Ali's character is overdone. The overall alacrity of the way in which Oliver dispatches his father who clearly loves him is so tragic leaving him utterly destitute emotionally is just unbelievable. Tragedy on many levels, and yet a beautiful love story. In the end Oliver's inability to redeem himself is the worst of all. Honestly I think it's just a bad script with a lot of potential in the back stories. See more Read all reviews
