Critics Consensus

While familiar and uneven at times, Low Tide is an atmospheric coming-of-age yarn lifted by strong performances from its young cast and a firm directorial hand from newcomer Kevin McMullin.

If not a great movie, it's just good enough to make me curious to see what the filmmaker has up his sleeve next. More importantly, it helps make his thoughtfully meditative debut worthy of a look. Go to Full Review Peter Debruge Variety Oct 5, 2019
Kevin McMullin channels the feel of Stephen King's 'Stand by Me,' along with various noir-toned '80s films, in this coming-of-age thriller. Go to Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Oct 4, 2019

Without the strong filmmaking behind it, the film would be nowhere near as engaging as it is. Go to Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Jul 12, 2020
Low Tide is a crime thriller, but the movie is also a compelling look at how these boys make decisions that will have a profound effect on the type the men that they will become. Go to Full Review Isaac Feldberg Fortune Nov 21, 2019

Joe Q @Irresponsible Mar 15, 2026 I really enjoyed this film. See more Eli B @RT85540821 Mar 3, 2024 Low Tide is not an entirely forgettable experience. The movie's visual style, and performances from Keean Johnson and Shea Whigham, offer fleeting glimpses of promise. However, it ultimately fails to capitalize on that same potential, succumbing to a derivative plot and uninspired character decisions. A deep cut in the A24 catalog worth seeing for fans of the studio.
