Critics Consensus

Buoyed by Jonathan Demme's intuitive direction and Michelle Pfeiffer's irresistible charisma, Married to the Mob is a saucy mix of broad comedy and gangster drama.

Demme sees corruption-the potential for it and the indulgence of it-in everyone. Yet he doesn't neglect the humanity of the people in thrall to or trapped within those systems.

The results are very good - far better and funnier than most of what is being made these days.

Demme makes crystal-clear what some have suspected for quite a while: that there are few more luxurious movie pleasures than watching Michelle Pfeiffer when she's given a role worthy of her.

Everything is Horrible (Substack)

A despairing little parable about domestic abuse and police indifference, made even bleaker by the fact that it treats its main character’s predicament like a punch line.

[Jonathan] Demme revs the film up with outsized characters and tacky fashions colliding with the freewheeling multicultural energy of Pfeiffer’s new home, a way of life that invigorates her in a way the insular mob life never did...

Very well directed by Jonathan Demme. Intelligently written and beautifully brought to screen. Whole stellar cast excels in character, Michelle Pfeiffer and Mercedes Ruehl especially 😜 Funny, witty, fast moving with lots of action, dilemma, drama, confusion, flair, twists, suspense and emotion. Great cinematography and visually stunning. All time classic

Pfeiffer's fab but Mercedes rules. At times we all need a little help from our friends or from friendly cops. Enjoyable comedy that rates well within its own universe. It's not Goodfellas or The Godfather or even Mikey and Nicky, but it's funny. Very funny.

It was a silly R rated 80s comedy. It has its moments, but I don't plan to see it again. I saw it since it was on the NYT 1000 movies list. SLC DVD.
