While May in the Summer paints a compelling family portrait, May remains a largely opaque character, so the film doesn't totally deliver as a tale of her self-discovery. Go to Full Review Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Apr 16, 2015
Dabis's character comes off as a self-serving fantasy. Go to Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times Sep 4, 2014

Dabis covers a lot of ground as a storyteller while delivering a smart, focused performance. Go to Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Aug 30, 2019
Plays as if it's quite undecided about whether it wants to be a socially aware comedy of cultural clashes or, unfortunately, a murky melodrama that pulls out all the subtle stops when it decides to stop spinning. Go to Full Review Javier Ocaña El Pais (Spain) Aug 9, 2016
If you're looking for a deep reflection on Jordan and the Middle East, this isn't the film for you. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Manu Yáñez Fotogramas Aug 9, 2016
The film itself is very regular, but when the family drama kicks in everything gets more interesting. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Claudio C @Claudio666 Apr 20, 2026 Mother and Daughters (12,402 – 20 Apr 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) The writer May (Cherien Dabis) travels from New York to her hometown in Jordan to organize her wedding with her fiancé, Columbia Professor Oum Ziad (Haifa Agha). Her divorced mother Nadine (Hiam Abbass) tells May that she will not go to the wedding since Ziad is Muslim and she is evangelical. May meets her sister Dalia (Alia Shawkat) and Yasmine (Nadine Malouf); visits her father Edward (Bill Pullman) and his wife Anu (Ritu Singh Pande); and befriends the touristic guide Karim (Elie Mitri). Along the days, family secrets are disclosed and May has cold feet. "May in the Summer" (2013) is a simple film about a woman that returns to her hometown to plan her wedding and makes discovers about her family, leading her to call off the marriage. The plot is realistic and the acting top-notch. My vote is seven. Venden una comedia pero es en realidad un drama de telenovela de medio oriente. In reality a pretty rosy picture of the situation. See more Read all reviews
