Critics Consensus

Despite sometimes sitcom-like execution, Meet the Parents is a hilarious look at familial relationships that works mostly because the chemistry between its two leads is so effective.

It’s just that it’s the kind of comedy that’s as likely to have you gnawing your fist in an agony of embarrassment as it is to make you laugh. Go to Full Review Bob Thomas Associated Press Jul 17, 2019
Meet the Parents isn't as funny as There's Something About Mary, nor as outrageous. But it confirms that Ben Stiller is the best of today's young practitioners of frustration comedy. Go to Full Review Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader Apr 9, 2012
Scenes that should have been uproarious are weaker than many of the movie's smaller moments, whose everyday humor isn't specific to the plot or characters. Go to Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Sep 17, 2026

Meet the Parents may not demand repeat viewings—a number of the jokes are based in shock humor, therefore don’t last beyond their first exposure—but that first time, it’s an incredibly funny studio comedy. Go to Full Review Michael Kleinschrodt Times-Picayune May 30, 2019

See more Kris G @Kromez7 Aug 12, 2026 A comedy classic, De Niro is phenomenal as Jack Byrnes. I feel like Stiller is still finding his footing as Greg Focker in this film, though still hilarious. It was made to be many things. One of those is to be funny and, yes, the movie is definitely successful at that. I love this movie! I would recommend this for a fun family night!
