Anya S @AnyaS 4 days ago Not very interesting as far as a police procedural since the cops are bumbling, brutal idiots, and women basically appear as victims (and the obligatory friendly prostitute), but Bong Hoon Jo is a masterful director and knows how to tell a story, exploring interesting ideas about the search for truth and evil. Good action, drama, and story See more Leonardo K @RT80520392 Sep 6, 2026 Memories of Murder is not a profound portrait of institutional failure. It is two hours of watching incompetent, brutish detectives repeatedly mishandle murder cases while the film mistakes caricature for social criticism. If Bong’s point is that 1980s Korea made solving these crimes impossible, then show the system doing that. Show bureaucracy, political interference, bad incentives, resource denial, institutional pressure. Instead, most of the failure comes from detectives who are already stupid, violent and morally dubious before the "system" supposedly breaks them. A few protests, scarce forensic resources and background political context do not create causality. They create background noise. As a procedural, the investigation is dull. As social criticism, it is underdeveloped. As black comedy, the buffoonery sits horribly beside murdered women who remain largely interchangeable. Though this movie appears to be a low budget film considering there's not a lot of special effects, multiple scenes are shot in the same location(s), what makes this movie unforgettable is the raw acting ability of the cast, and the moral dilemma the movie poses to the audience. It's a fantastic story with a fantastic cast, and I feel this move should get way more hype. See more Colby S @ColbySchoetz Jul 20, 2026 Bong Joon-ho is a master of the craft and no other work of artiste of his is better than Memories of Murder. A film in which a team of South Korean detectives investigate one of the most chilling murder/rape case ever put to screen. The detective team is played by a wonderful ensemble lead by Song Kang-ho (fresh off his phenomenal performances in Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance and Joint Security Area, two early Park Chan-wook films) and Kim Sang-kyung. The films final sequence really nails in the fact that a killer could be any ordinary person. What this movie did is introduce a thrilling and excruciating mystery and leave it with a direct stare at the camera that sends shivers down your spine. Memories of Murder is one of the best films of all time, if not the best film of all time. See more Read all reviews
