Critics Consensus

Somber and boldly intimate, Mother of Flies is a folk horror chamber piece that infuses its meditation on death with jaw-dropping practical effects and ferocious weirdness.

But there are so many compensations that it’s very much worth seeing for anyone who loves horror—especially the atmospheric and gory, dread-based type, rather than the kind that is single-mindedly obsessed with staging jump-scares. Go to Full Review

The result is occult horror as potent as the snake venom in one of Selveig’s dreadful “cures.” Go to Full Review

Overall, this is better and glossier than some of the Adams-Poser posse’s earlier efforts, but perhaps not quite enough of an evolution to take their vision to the next level. Go to Full Review

For a low-budget production like Mother of Flies, the film hints at how creativity can be efficiently amplified and freely shared through solidified collaboration. Go to Full Review

While the acting and dialog aren’t nearly as polished as they should be, making the flow oddly forced, the heart of the story, the themes it addresses, and the superb practical effects make for a nasty and mostly enjoyable watching experience. Go to Full Review

Tim T @Timteague 11h Really enjoyed it. Loved the use of a daylight lush forest, such a contrast to what we expect. See more nilufer e @Nilicim 1d A slow and unsettling film that focuses more on mood than on story. The atmosphere is dark and uncomfortable, and the sound and visuals help build constant tension. The film doesn’t explain everything clearly, which may not work for everyone, but it fits the themes of guilt, the body, and transformation. It’s a disturbing experience that stays with you after it ends. See more Yusef E @yusef_endure 2d I just saw it and loved the hell out of it. My favorite scene is where Selveig contrasts the poison of chemotherapy with natural medicine. Both had painful side effects, but the chemo failed to cure the daughter. Seeing the Divine Feminine reset was also brilliant. Great film See more Angelina S @pittsyruns325 2d I don’t know how this got such a good rotten tomato score. So much build up for nothing. Don’t watch this! See more Zenzi A. @zenzi 3d Love the atmosphere #JusticeForSolveig See more Neal @YesThatNeal 3d Loved Hell Hole but this was unbearable. Still a John Adams fan, though.
