In the desert near Los Angeles, a beautiful woman named Allison Pond (Jennifer Connelly) is found murdered. A special investigative unit led by hard-edged detective Max Hoover (Nick Nolte) is brought in when it looks like the victim may have ties to a secret military program. But Hoover has his own secret: Unbeknown to his adoring wife (Melanie Griffith), Allison is his ex-mistress, and her friend Jimmy Fields (Andrew McCarthy) has secretly filmed pornographic evidence of their affair.

Critics Consensus

Mulholland Falls' vacant characterizations and thin story undercuts its impressive cast and potent style, making for an empty exercise in noir posturing.

The cast is really good, the story is interesting but it was kind of a let down at the end.

Connelly, Melanie Griffith and Bruce Dern all fare well in a predominantly misused cast, but the tone of this talkfest is dreary.

I'd give the film a solid B, if not B+. It's not formulaic, it's quirky and surprising at times. Other times it's predictable, yet when what you predict happens it's not necessarily bad you might even enjoy it a little. Nick Nolte was great Jennifer Connelly was great even Melanie Griffith was pretty darn good. Chaz Palminteri was wonderful and it was nice to see Bruce Dern. I'm not sure, but it might have been Michael Peterson's first film role. He's not in it very long but he was pretty good too. I think the film is well worth watching, and I watched it several times. It may not be in my top 10, but it's certainly in my top 25.

This movie is so much better than it has credit for, you've got to be crazy

For all the scandal, Mulholland Falls lacks grit. Nolte and Griffith aren't really believable as a struggling couple.

Finally I had the opportunity to watch the film, because I am a neo-noir films guy and honestly I am left with good impressions for the film compared to the given opinions of the others. The conception of the film is amazing but I won’t spoiler it for those that didn’t still watched it. The acting on other hand is also very well performed by the actors and of course Chazz Palminteri - one of my favourite “mafia” actors - “A Bronx Tale” has an astonishing performance and yet at the end… So to resume this the film is “must watch films” and overall it is a good movie with great story, great acting and great ending (somewhat…)!
