Critics Consensus

A chilling ghost story that deftly reimagines Japanese horror conventions, Never After Dark pairs Moeka Hoshi's compelling performance with elegant craftsmanship and slow-building, inexorable dread.

There’s a real thrill to be found in how “Never After Dark” taps into the temporal dimensions of its timeless genre, its blithe spirit gradually stiffening into the stuff of a Kiyoshi Kurosawa chiller as it confronts the dangers of a broken clock. Go to Full Review

Like the Overlook Hotel in "The Shining" the inn is a contributing character in the story, though not as enveloping as Stanley Kubrick’s horror hotel. Go to Full Review

Boyle provides us with something unconventional, at the same time he keeps us entertained and increasingly apprehensive. Never After Dark is a welcome addition to the genre. Go to Full Review

Elizabeth 4 days ago Great movie that felt creepy and sad but satisfying ending See more John 4 days ago Great creepy horror movie with a satisfying ending. See more Daniel R @RT51613537 18 hrs ago I wish this movie was getting a wider release because it is EXCELLENT. It's been three days since I saw it and I still can't stop thinking about it. I LOVED the main character. I was scared and shocked out of my wits. Great movie. See more Moody C @MoodyC 20 hrs ago Ghost turned crazy murderer movie. Not sure if that works but definitely different. However, different doesn’t mean perfect RT score. I was so bored until murderer showed up like around last half an hour. See more Eric B @RT59758276 2 days ago I really enjoyed this film! Genuinely scary with great performances and great visuals. It's a really fresh take on the haunted house movie, with some real surprises along the way. Clever use of some camera techniques and the single location never gets boring. The sound design is impeccable, and it is reliant on the sound for the mood and the creepy vibe. A great find for horror fans. See more peter Z @RT59105073 5 days ago I'm not a big fan of horror movies; the usual comly cast doing stupid stuff and being picked off one by one. This a very different film. It's centered on a young woman who is an expert ghost buster, the two of them well known in the occult world. (Yes, two and it's not a gender choice; you have to see the film.) They are retained to rid a resort (occupied only by the owners, a mother and son) of a problem presence. Everyone does everything right and yet some pretty cringe scenes (not recommended for the very sensitive or young) happen. Clever writing, excellent acting and directing. a must see if you like horror, or even if you don't. See more Read all reviews
