Clarisse Loughrey Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Jul 26, 2019
The documentary holds back. There's no real narrative, not much text on screen...it's a very nuanced, inflammatory subject, so you lose a lot in just showing it without explanation or context... Go to Full Review Leslie Felperin Guardian Jul 25, 2019

It progresses, however, into something darker and sadder, and is a bitter testament to the power of commercial interests to weaponise the law for financial gain. Go to Full Review Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) Jul 29, 2019

Tense, provocative but impressively balanced, Of Fish and Foe shows green issues are not always black and white. Go to Full Review Alistair Harkness Scotsman Jul 26, 2019

Allegations of collusion between the activists and the anglers duly follow but the film's strength lies in the way it subtly probes the murky role class plays in defining how a country presents itself to the world. Go to Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Feb 26, 2019

Whilst Heathcote's film doesn't always flatter, it does succeed in capturing a disappearing lifestyle at a critical point in history. It's a film whose value is likely to increase with time and an intriguing point of a little-observed community. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Feb 21, 2020 A nuanced documentary which doesn't show either the netsmen or their opponents as saints. Some viewers might need subtitles: speech is sometimes muffled in the natural sound mix, and the east Scotland accents of the fishermen means they are harder to follow than the more clear-spoken environmentalists. The main complaint must be the lack of detail in the film: how many salmon did the Pullars catch each year; how much were they worth; how many were employed at the fishing? We are never told. (Note the past tense, as coastal salmon netting has been banned in Scottish waters since 2016 - a fact which only emerges towards the end of the film, making if of primarily historical interest even before it was released.)
