Christian K @ckacar Jul 10, 2026 Incredibly strong direction and performances with a moving and emotional ending. See more Jace E @thefilmguy Jun 23, 2026 How this movie made me feel in one word: Melancholy. I've never fully understood the power of Denzel Washington until seeing this film. I've always known of Tom Hanks' acting chops, but Denzel really goes toe to toe with him in this movie. The story illustrated in this film is tragic (not only the disease but the treatment of society). I found myself caring deeply for what happened to Andy. The verdict kind of snuck up on me. I thought there might be a bit more in the courtroom or deliberations. That being said, this is still a great movie with incredible performances all around. Best Character: Joe Miller (honorable mention to Andy's partner, Miguel) Best Quote: "With all due respect, your honor, we don't live in this courtroom, do we?" - Joe Best Scene: The Halloween Party Best Piece of Score: "Precedent" Best Song: "Streets of Philadelphia" See more Ian W. @iwaldman Jun 21, 2026 I’ve seen some describe this movie as a LGBTQ+ movie made for a straight audience. Although I think that may be partially true, I don’t think that takes away from its impact or is necessarily a critique of the film. When you look at when this film was released, it speaks even more to how important and necessary it was. Would there be different casting decisions today? Absolutely, but I thought Tom Hanks was terrific and gave a heartbreaking performance. Denzel Washington was also great. His character was far from perfect, but I loved how we were able to watch his growth in real time. I miss films like this, where it has a feeling of everyday life to it. With the film being called ‘Philadelphia’ it was nice that it actually felt like we were living in Philadelphia for a short while. The atmosphere was palpable, both geographically and culturally. Although the story was emotional, there was a sense of warmth to the film that can only be attributed to the incredible direction of the film See more Ryan F @RT74441166 Apr 29, 2026 A little too depressing for me! I don't think Tom Hanks should've gotten the oscar! Denzel Washington was good. The story was good but it was depressing See more Jerod S @jeroduptown Jan 30, 2026 It's a schmaltzy, romanticized view of what having AIDS in the 90s might have been like. Though the court case itself is a no-brainer and done well by Denzel, the rest of the plot was flimsy. See more Pamela H. @hummus Jan 18, 2026 Mediocre at best. Great cast See more Read all reviews
