Darcy (Dev Patel) and Daphne (Rosy McEwen) Davenport are freshly decamped from London and taking up residence in an isolated cottage deep in the Welsh countryside in search of creative renewal and acoustic inspiration. When the couple set about exploring their new environs, recording instruments in tow, Darcy stumbles upon a "faerie circle" that emits a strange, unidentifiable frequency; this odd discovery is followed closely by the appearance of an otherworldly child (Jade Croot) who claims to live nearby and is eager to befriend the Davenports. Soon the child becomes a fixture in their household, alternately ingratiating himself and raising suspicions, and exposing unacknowledged rifts and unexamined secrets that threaten to wreak psychological and spiritual havoc in the lives of his makeshift adoptive parents.

Critics Consensus

A bold creative swing that doesn't quite connect, Rabbit Trap captures the attention with its hypnotic soundscape but can't maintain its hold due to a disappointingly thin story.

As debuts go, it’s a confident and distinctive one, marking Bryn Chainey as a filmmaker with a strong feel for atmosphere and an ear for the unsettling sounds hidden in everyday life.

Technically, Rabbit Trap is assured, particularly in its use of analogue equipment and dense sound design. Emotionally, though, it remains curiously hollow.

The script occasionally lapses into awkward passages of mystico-poetic rhetoric; otherwise, Rabbit Trap creates an insidious imagistic poetry of its own.

Rabbit Trap does seem a case of style over substance. However, that style is abundantly mesmerising at its best and charged with the mystery of dark and deep places.

Rabbit Trap doesn’t exactly snap to break bones, but it does its best to make a long-lasting impression.

Yet, for all Croot's creepiness and some perturbing excursions into the woods, Chainey puts more effort into the atmospherics than the structure of a story that never quite gets its hooks in.

It’s okay movie, it not that creepy of movie it’s about entity indulging it self in side lives of a couple pretending to be something it’s not. I had to read up on the movie and what it was about couple of times along with asking questions about different events just so I could figure out what my own interpretation of movie was it seems that no one can come to a consensus on an interpretation. My own take is the entity was taking advantage of the couple forcing them to confront there own I’m ability to have a child or possible loose of child maybe miscarriage or health issue due to fact that couple talked about almost having a child but then did not. So entire I think feed living off of there trauma and pushed it to surface to cause issues at end the couple just accepted there issues problems they had and then it seems the entity disappears from there world and turns into a a dead rabbit that they burry. Its not great story but acting good by actors was good.

Not quite what I expected but still... it started as a unique blend of folk-ish horror and aural horror (which there isn't enough of despite efforts) that had my full attenton, however the ending was a bit of a disappointment that left a lot to inference. I wanted to score this higher but I just can’t with this ending,

Very few films attempt to respectfully convey encounters with the otherworld, this does and with impact. Thankfully it doesn't try hand hold or over explain, as so much modern media does, leaves space for the imagination to breathe
