Critics Consensus

Even Harrison Ford could not save the dull plot and the slow pacing of the movie.

This might have been tailor-made by director Pollack to ease Ford into more straightforwardly romantic territory. Go to Full Review Rick Groen Globe and Mail Mar 22, 2002

There's nothing new here, just the same plot, the same romantic pattern that we keep seeing over and over. Go to Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Jun 29, 2024

...a slow, somber drama that’s rarely as engrossing or compelling as its subject matter (and roster of talented performers) might’ve indicated... Go to Full Review Tom Hutchinson Radio Times Feb 9, 2024

Sydney Pollack directs with real skill, convincingly portraying the emotional complications of middle-aged passion, and is aided by the marvellous performances of Ford and Scott Thomas. Go to Full Review Chuck Klosterman Akron Beacon Journal Oct 30, 2023

That kind of unorthodox (and perhaps unintentional) undercurrent is precisely what keeps Random Hearts interesting. Time and again, we see people reacting in ways that are unexpected, yet somehow realistic. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Jack K @RT97598417 Jun 2, 2026 Not every movie has to be perfect and clever. Sometimes a textural more realist portrayal of life is just what I need. I personally love 90’s standards and aesthetics and appreciate a slower pace sometimes. In fact I think it might be one of my favourite movies of all time. Not trying to prove anything, not trying to keep your attention with cheap tricks at every turn.. just exploring an interesting concept in a visually interesting way. Themes of trust, love, mourning enough to keep me perfectly satisfied throughout. Dave Grusin score delightfully easy and consistent. Not trying to prove anything either! See more John S @RT50944981 Mar 10, 2026 The incredibly insipid and banal dialogue in this film is like nails on the blackboard or like the Mazak at the dentists office. Hey kids... wanna ditch your current? Cuddle up on the couch and rent this puppy. See more William D @Williams0604 Mar 10, 2026 Good movie that I would recommend. See more Jeffrey P @vanillavoodoo1 Sep 20, 2025 Always interesting to find an old movie you didn’t even know existed with a big name actor, let alone a completely stacked cast. That said, everything in this plot felt so pointless, both during and after. See more Michael M @RT29715540 Aug 19, 2025 The movie was much too slow. Great acting by Ford and Thomas. The side plots (her politics and his police work)were in the movie just to fill up time. They had too little to do with the story. All in all, a big waste of time See more Melissa L @Agent99 Jul 5, 2025 As a widow who knows other widows, I'd have to say you really don't know a person until they've passed on, and you find out their secrets. I thought this was a great movie. I recommend it. See more Read all reviews
