Critics Consensus

Raw's lurid violence and sexuality live up to its title, but they're anchored with an immersive atmosphere and deep symbolism that linger long after the provocative visuals fade.

Raw is one of few films in the "female cannibal" canon, one that flips the power dynamic of women in horror so they are in control, rather than afraid of, their own carnal desires. Go to Full Review Dahlia Balcazar Bitch Media Feb 17, 2021
Julia Ducournau's feature film debut Raw joins the canon with the French teen-cannibal, coming-of-age story I didn't know I was waiting for. Go to Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses Aug 25, 2018
It often takes decades for filmmakers to strike the right sense of balance Ducournau has achieved with Raw, and she is a director and writer with a formidable grasp. Go to Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment Mar 10, 2025

Raw is one of those horror films that really sticks with you. Not because it plants a horrific imprint on your brain but because it is a genre film with a real arthouse feel that further enhances the film. Go to Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film Aug 2, 2024

A staggering film debut with "unflinching" gore and disturbing atmosphere, reviving the best of what became known as the New French Extremity movement. Go to Full Review Marshall Shaffer Vague Visages Dec 6, 2023
These crashes back into a messy reality invoke how the rise and fall of a plot arc represents a merely synthetic change. Actual transformation takes more than just giving into a gut response spurred by familial intervention. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Quinten B @klimmesil Aug 30, 2026 Disgusting in every way (I saw someone post a 0.5 stars with "disgusting in every way" as a review, so I had to make the joke) See more yass M @yassminn Apr 2, 2026 disgusting in every way See more Mix R @Foxxxy Mar 30, 2026 I think the English title sums the film the best - it's raw. It's ugly, violent and passionate, full of sexual subtext, body horror and disgusting scenes. And yet, the scariest thing about "Raw" is the psychology and mindset of the main characters. The last scene hit me like a hammer - I have never seen a film to end so perfectly. See more Tommy D @Thomas005 Mar 6, 2026 Disgusting, but I loved it. The best cannibal movie ever See more London L @lllondon Jan 5, 2026 I didn’t like it. I mean if you wanna watch pointless cannibalism and gore, then you’d like it. But there’s nothing to take away from this movie. I’m not saying every movie has to make you come to this super philosophical epiphany, but it should be something, and this is nothing! Another cannibalism movie, for example, Bones and all. It has a meaning to it. But i just couldn’t seem to find a meaning for this movie. And even if there is a meaning/message, it’s totally overshadowed by the violence and gore. See more Alejandra C @RT30574541 Sep 5, 2025 its such a weird concept that makes you want to watch it and its exactly what you were expecting. Not a bad thing.. See more Read all reviews
