Survivors of a strange contagion which turns humans into ghouls find themselves aboard a ship where a doctor is trying to isolate the source of the outbreak.

Critics Consensus

After a lackluster third entry, [REC] 4 gets the series back on track, at least to the level of the first sequel.

There is plenty of ferocious tension here, but also some very well-pitched goofiness, with even a cameo from the Sumatran rat monkeys of Peter Jackson's proto-romzomcom from 1992, Braindead.

With [REC] 4, Balaguer returns to the main storyline and to the kind of claustrophobic setting where [REC] really thrives, ditching the slapstick splatter of [REC] 3 without sacrificing zombie gore.

Whatever scant insight the prior films offered into Spain's waning Catholic belief has now been entirely replaced by fascist, cartoonish shows of wish-fulfillment prevarication.

[REC] 4: Apocalypse completely disregards the religious and demonic aspects of the first three films and...doesn't make sense in the continuity of the franchise.

Significantly better than I'd expected. Less scary, but just as kinetic as the first entry in the series; though one might wonder why it's even called 'Rec' in the first place when it has completely shed its found footage conceit as well as its convincing performances. Still, it's a fun little jostle that never stops to catch its breath. Not the send-off the series deserved, but an entertaining entry nonetheless.

A fitting end to the franchise. The film was good and the storyline worked well.
