In a future where humanity has surrendered its ability to dream in exchange for immortality, an outcast (Jackson Yee) finds illusion, nightmarish visions, and beauty in an intoxicating world of his own making. A work of staggering imagination from visionary Chinese director Bi Gan (Long Day's Journey Into Night), Resurrection conjures vast and ever-shifting worlds on the brink of collapse in an era-spanning journey through our deepest and most human desires.

Critics Consensus

Pushing against the boundaries of storytelling with overwhelming style, Bi Gan's Resurrection is equal parts inscrutable and invigoratingly awake to the endless possibilities of cinema.

Resurrection, shot with extravagant beauty by Dong Jingsong, makes more sense on first viewing than the director perhaps allows. Each story is whole in itself. But it has the quality of a gorgeous knot that will never fully be untied.

Bi Gan’s vivid storytelling moves through the astral planes in Resurrection, reincarnating a rebel dreamer (Jackson Yee) across 100 years of Chinese history, experienced as six chapters each in a different cinematic style.

Its intricately-wrought plot strands seem to fall apart as you try to grasp them, like snowflakes melting on hot skin. There are connections and resonances, sure, but it doesn't feel as though the Deliriant's dreams are ultimately intended to make sense.

It is easy to get lost in Resurrection’s swarming falsities, especially on first viewing. Its menagerie of styles, stories, symbols, references, and effects seems intentionally overwhelming—a rapturous, frustrating, exhausting experience.

Resurrection, despite all its dazzling visual architecture, ends up resembling an extraordinary museum more than an unforgettable dream. [Full review in Spanish]

At times it's more of a visual installation than a narrative, but it's definitely a narrative made from the heart, for the heart, which I think we should be very, very grateful for in contemporary cinema. [Full review in Spanish]

Abstractism at its finest in this anthology series of films where the cinematography is too immaculate and methodical for the runtime of the whole thing.
