Critics Consensus

Rim of the World is too bland to live up to the 80s teen adventures it references, and too full of clichés to be able to set itself apart from them.

For those with a soft spot for coming-of-age adventures, Rim of the World is just passable, but it's riddled with logic leaps, tonal inconsistencies and out of touch humor.

The clockwork storyline is brazen in its adherence to formula, as if a Learning Annex seminar somehow came to life.

Its greatest value is probably in how it could educate budding movie-lovers on cheesy and predictable storytelling, but even that seems like a lesson Rim of the World cynically teaches at an elementary level.

A funny, character-driven film and a throwback to the sci-fi films that helped shape pop culture.

McG's biggest project in a while lacks the most important thing about the 80s films it tries to emulate - the sense of opening up a secret part of the world.

Barely passable for entertainment, predictable scenes follow a pattern of old tired scenes from a thousand other movies

Holy racism Batman! Couldn’t they afford a script editor or an actual script writer. This movie is so blatant the only thing I could think of was how desperate were the people of color to participate in this offensive unfunny excuse for a motion picture. I wish I could give this bigoted rubbish negative stars. Do not recommend.

A movie about four teens that are sent to summer camp and get caught up in an alien invasion. The movie is funny with a lot of action. People need to watch it for what it is. And its TV14 meaning most kids can handle it. Don't let the reviews intimidate you. Its a teenagers movie. Though as an adult I enjoyed it..

Rim of the World has a decent hook — a group of kids stuck at summer camp when chaos hits — but it never turns that premise into something truly fun. It tries to juggle ’80s adventure vibes, coming-of-age beats, and light sci-fi, yet the script feels generic, with template dialogue and choices that don’t land. The young cast isn’t awful, but there’s not much charisma, and in this kind of movie you really need the group to be instantly likable. Add jittery editing and a "bigger than it is" vibe, and the whole thing ends up pretty forgettable. It can pass the time if you’re not demanding, but it’s hard to care.

The blatant stereotypes had me losing interest almost immediately. Nobody really grew in character, and the only development taking place seemed to have morphed individuals into goofballs you couldn't take that serious. One of the main protagonists was so dreadfully written, a part of me was hoping they'd get lost or die off. The shift in character priorities and their reasoning at times were so jarring and ridiculous, it was just hard to believe. It was not a fun watch.
