It takes a very bad film for me to no longer be able to suspend my disbelief or even just not give a sht about what happens to any of the characters any more and just turn it off. This is one of those films. Literally from the first few minutes of Robin of Loxley's time on the Crusades re-imagined as a quasi gun fight in the ruins of a middle eastern city , it is just painful to watch, it is that silly. It marginally improves on Robin's return to England, but, again, the ludicrous use of a bow as a semi automatic weapon and the repeating crossbows of the guards (who, inexplicably, completely cover their faces) just become overwhelmingly daft and annoying. I feel that the director wanted to make the Matrix, but missed his chance and so is just repeating the dynamics of the Matrix in a medieval world, which just does not work at any point. The weak script and lacklustre plot don't help, to be honest, but even a fairly decent cast cannot save this. Avoid. See more Graeme R @Davr0s Jul 3 Mostly just disappointed with this. Cast was fine but the glaringly silly anachronistic costumes and settings jarred constantly, distracting you from ever being transported fully. The worst was the crusaders battle gear looking remarkably like modern kevlar, and generic riot shields appearing during the later heist. Robin's skills were like that of the Green Arrow delivered in the style of John Wick. We also had an industrial scale mine and forge constantly blowing off great plumes of flame in the background of any pursuit sequence and a protagonist that whilst having been shot in both the leg and chest was, well, fine actually. Then we had the extremely weak plot point/hole where our big baddies openly discuss their plans and high treason in front of Robin purely because the Sheriff says he trusts him. Combine that with the albeit ambitious but militant Will throwing his lot in with the Cardinal purely because Marion kissed Robin - and how does a RC Cardinal appoint a local sheriff??? See more Chris S @Janomi Jun 29 This is my least favorite adaptation of one of my favorite legendary characters, but I do appreciate that it tries something different. Otto Bathurst reimagines Robin Hood as a modern action hero, staging energetic set pieces where archery is treated almost like gunplay. The stylized action is visually exciting, even if it feels far removed from the traditional legend. Jamie Foxx is the film's biggest strength, bringing authority, heart, and gravitas to Little John while serving as Robin's mentor. Taron Egerton is a likable Robin, but the screenplay never gives him enough time to fully develop the character. The biggest issue is that the movie can't decide what it wants to be. It bounces between historical epic, superhero origin story, and action blockbuster, leaving the tone feeling uneven. Even with interesting ideas about corruption and rebellion, the rushed writing keeps the emotional stakes from ever fully landing. See more Katy R @KatyKaty Jun 28 I didn't think I could dislike a movie this much. I'd heard not great reviews, but I thought it would be a fun Saturday afternoon flick, but I was very wrong. I'd heard they did interesting things with archery, but I was wholly unimpressed by the bows-and-arrows are just like guns style in the movie. I'm all for reimagining source material, but what they did with this movie was just frustrating and disrespectful to the original Robin Hood characters and plot. They added a religious element that seems WILDLY out of place in what I thought was supposed to be a fun summer blockbuster. Whatever your opinions on religion, what they did in this movie will probably just make you say "ew..." and "WHAT did Robin Hood just say?! That's messed up." The costumes were the least of the issues, but for good measure: the costumes were probably supposed to be cool or stylish, but they just seem out of place. Expected a fast action flick, but the messy tone and forced modern wardrobe honestly took me out of it. What Worked: • The archery training with Foxx looks super cool with a fun Action RPG vibe. • Mendelsohn plays a great, slimy villain with tons of memorable energy. • The bass-driven score completely pops and adds awesome tension to heists. The Friction: • The political conspiracy part with the Cardinal really dragged for me. • Forcing modern military tactics into medieval times honestly felt super awkward.
