A film about time and place that evokes the past look of films and tv specials, to tell the story of time gone and returned. Instead, I spent most of the film waiting for the story to arrive. It never did. This isn't a slow burn, it's a candle that forgot to light. The plot wanders around like it has lost its car keys, characters drift in and out doing mysterious things, and every unanswered question seems to be treated as evidence of genius rather than a lack of explanation. The praise surrounding this film feels like a modern art exhibition where everyone stands around nodding at a blank canvas because nobody wants to be the first person to say, "Actually, this is rubbish." Confusion is not automatically depth, and being vague doesn't make something profound. I enjoy films that make you think, but there has to be something to think about. Rose of Nevada seems to mistake being unclear for being clever and forgets that storytelling still requires a story. By the end I was just relieved it was over. See more jesse v 5d interesting to see a spiritual prequel/successor to The Lighthouse but now in Technicolor. unfortunately half of the movie is photographic composition styling fodder where no wide shots are allowed. it's just fishermen doing fishing things with a twist of back to the future but replace the cheerful comedy with British drama. also why are all the scenes on the ship SO LOUD?? also this gets the award for smallest credits text ever. Acting, plot, character development, and cinematography make for a good movie. WHO KNEW??? Hollywood needs to get back on that path and follow Mark Jenkin in those directions.
