Ruth Gordon received an award for Minnie, rightfully so. john Casavetes should have been given one also for being an excellent actor playing a mediocre actor who is convinced by the end of the film that he is a brilliant actor. My only fault to find? I think the tension could have been increased, if they'd left it ambiguous as to whether Rosemary was delusional or if it was really happening to her until the very end when she goes through the closet into the Castavet's apartment. Until that moment they should have filmed each scene as....she thinks its this...but it could also be as normal as this. And, while I don’t agree with that statement, I do think this is a great movie. For starters, Rosemary is a great protagonist, and, by the end of the movie, you really feel scared for her. It’s like you’re right there with her, scared, afraid, and longing for answers to the mysterious behaviors of the people around her. That’s where this movie really thrives. When you’re scared for her. It also has a unique tone. You really get the sense that something isn’t right, and that helps add to the uneasy feeling of the movie. Overall, this movie may be a little overrated to me, but it was still really good, and I can see why someone might say this is one of their favorite horror movies. The eerie occurrences involving cultish and demonic conspiracies contribute to Rosemary’s paranoid state of mind, further intensified by the neighbours’ overwhelming presence, her husband’s whimsical yet controlling behavior, and finally the doctor’s questionable authority over her body. The film shares aspects of what Charlotte Gilman had already portrayed in the short story The Yellow Wallpaper, including the coercive apparatus of the male-dominated medical world, patriarchal structures that enable control over the "hysterical" woman, and the gothic delirium into schizophrenia. While the film showcases a great deal of psychological insight into the nervous and angsty isolation with which the protagonist struggles, the time it takes to tell the story ultimately feels overly prolonged See more Read all reviews
