Thomas S 01/05/2025 This movie hit me right in the feels. The topic of otherness. Having to adapt to others and never having it the other way around. Resenting your background and being resented in return, intellectual asphyxia, escaping the family home to follow your dreams. The company of books, not judging and not asking for attention. All these are things are only too familiar. I am mesmerized how such a slow-paced movie can be that gripping. Lene Cecilia Sparrok is absolutely incredible. The scene that brought me to tears was when she asks for a letter from her teacher to study further. And learns that what they learn is way less than other Swedish kids study. A whole world and opinion she had of herself come crashing down in her eyes. Beautiful. See more 06/12/2021 It takes a coming-of-age story and transform it into something with its own unique flavour. Although, it's also laced in sadness and self-hate. More than just the typical teenage insecurity, it goes far beyond that, when a terrible experience at school sprinkled with an equally terrifying experience once out of school makes a girl completely loathe herself, her culture, and eventually, even her family. The worst part is, you can't even blame her. All you can do is be perplexed at the odd beliefs of the Swedish people of that time, depicted in this film. Odd beliefs aimed at people not even that much different than them, other than a few lifestyle differences and climate differences. It lasts an entire lifetime and it's only with a specific event (I will omit details because it's a spoiler) after she succeeds in Swedish society, disproving the lies she was fed as a teenager, that she realizes that she was wrong, and more imporantly, that the predjudices against her were all very wrong.
