In this modern take on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," Frank Cross (Bill Murray) is a wildly successful television executive whose cold ambition and curmudgeonly nature has driven away the love of his life, Claire Phillips (Karen Allen). But after firing a staff member, Eliot Loudermilk (Bobcat Goldthwait), on Christmas Eve, Frank is visited by a series of ghosts who give him a chance to re-evaluate his actions and right the wrongs of his past.

Critics Consensus

Scrooged gets by with Bill Murray and a dash of holiday spirit, although it's hampered by a markedly conflicted tone and an undercurrent of mean-spiritedness.

It's not a bad notion for a satiric comedy and this one begins well, but then veers entirely out of hand until it's as over-inflated as its own Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come and as funny as a mugging.

On balance... Bill Murray's lazy humor carries the movie up until his genuinely sweet relationship with an old girlfriend.

Despite the juicy, on-the-edge craziness, Murray is able to layer his outrageous histrionics with an inner sensibility, making his ultimate transformation not only believable but Christmas-cheer uplifting.

What’s not to love? Take Bill Murray and the 1980s and presto instant classic, and no woke ish at all, it’s the best modern version of “a Christmas carol” I’ve ever seen and plenty of laughs for the kids and the adults without being vulgar….Family classic on the level of National lampoons

It's okay, it provides a standard, baseline viewing experience with no major surprises.

A fun time capsule of its time, a strong cast led by Bill Murray and Karen Allen at their peak. It made me laugh a few times, but it’s largely forgettable.

Watched it a day before Christmas Eve and man, it was BOOOOOORINGGGGGG. The only good parts about this movie were the ghosts. They were pretty cool in my opinion. Bill Murray didn’t play a good Scrooge at all. He wasn’t an over the top mean douche bag in this. It was just Bill Murray playing Bill Murray. If you want a better Christmas Carol movie watch the other ones.

While at times the obvious production problems can factor into pacing and performance issues, Scrooged overall is a funny, charming and successful updates version of the timeless classic.

An incredible update of the timeless classic. Bill Murray is at his best, and the film manages to feel heartwarming despite its complete irreverence. Once of the best "modern" holiday movies around.
