Young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) is haunted by a dark secret: he is visited by ghosts. Cole is frightened by visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. You leave slightly asquirm. You know it will linger. It becomes a clammy, chilly movie building toward a revelation that you cannot predict. As I say: I cannot tell you. You'd hate me if I did. I only knew the famous line about this film, but that was enough to figure out a few things. I also knew that Shyamalan likes twists and this is his most famous one. I figured it out, then forgot about it, because I had other theories and when the reveal happened, I was like "yep, shit". Considering the twist, certain things in the beginning don't make sense at all, but that's fine. I say that because in the end, the film moved me. That car scene was heart-breaking. The directing, cinematography and editing create a tone which works with the many genre elements involved here. A little bit of mystery, horror and lots of psychological thriller. I can't really talk about the other aspects of filmmaking, because I was locked in to the story. One more thing, the performances are top tier.
