Critics Consensus

Species shows flashes of the potential to blend exploitation and sci-fi horror in ingenious ways, but is ultimately mainly interested in flashing star Natasha Henstridge's skin.

It would be comforting to think that the genus Cinema Americana were guided by the principal of natural selection, but cloning and reversion seem, rather, to be the norm.

It's a lot of fun. It's certainly well directed. We've seen it all before, but I enjoyed it.

It's a sex horror-fantasy without laughs or life, a nightmare without sense, a casual pickup that should have been left at the disco.

Typifies middling Hollywood schlock: a pulpy, sleazy sci-fi/horror creature feature destined to cycle endlessly through cable airings and, now, to pad out streaming platforms.

While the effects often don’t hold up, and the script structure isn’t fully formed, this is a great slice of 90s-era sci-fi paranoia.

The creature effects were pretty good. The actresses playing the lead were good. But the script had a little too much cheese. Crybaby Forest Whittaker seemed to be plugged into the writers. His nonstop exposition was full of stuff he couldn't possibly know. The thrills were a little derivative and the director didn't let scenes breathe enough to build tension.

"Species" is competently directed, features a strong cast, and boasts fantastic special effects, an atmospheric score, and a welcome touch of eroticism. As is often the case, the problem lies in the pacing: the alien kills someone and escapes just moments before the team of scientists arrives. This scenario repeats itself over and over until the film reaches its finale. Consequently, "Species" never becomes particularly suspenseful or scary, though it succeeds well enough as light summer entertainment.

Certainly worth a watch if you've never seen it. Ahead of it's time in many ways. Great cast and all convincing in character. Great cinematography and groundbreaking visuals at the time. Intriguing, dramatic, lots of suspense, emotion and drama. Story not unique but entertaining nonetheless.
