Critics Consensus

A cliched and predictable sports comedy that's mostly devoid of excitement or laughs, Summer Catch is strictly bush-league.

It's a movie that should have been called on account of boredom. Go to Full Review Keith Phipps AV Club Jun 14, 2013
As the script works toward its big-game finale, it pauses now and then to rip off Bull Durham, to let Biel spout Successories-worthy words of encouragement, and to touch on subplots involving Prinze's familiar-faced teammates. Go to Full Review Malcolm Ritter Associated Press Jun 14, 2013
Maybe the filmmakers figured that the audience for Summer Catch is too young to have seen Bull Durham. Go to Full Review Matt Soergel Florida Times-Union Aug 8, 2014

Big chunks of plot seem to be missing, as if left on the editing-room floor so that director Mike Tollin, in his feature debut, can get to yet another inspiring speech. Go to Full Review Dennis King Tulsa World Aug 8, 2014
It's a baseball romance with precious little baseball and only the most insipid, by-the-numbers kind of romance. Go to Full Review Leah Rozen People Magazine Aug 8, 2014
This is the WB version of a baseball movie. Everyone is young, toned, sexually active and agonizes over their future. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Scott R @KiwiBruce Jun 14, 2026 It's not a great , but it's a fun summer movie that fits the era it was made in. It's embarrassing how many critics had to talk crap about it while also making baseball puns. See more Ed R @JustcallmeER Feb 10, 2025 A star-studded movie with a great story! See more Steve M @RT57413388 Jul 13, 2023 Just a little rom-com mixed in with sports and rich-poor class action. If you take it at that, it's okay. See more Aug 5, 2022 I'll preface my review by admitting that this movie is by no means artistically sound and falls victim to cliches and lousy writing. However, when I found out this movie had a tomato score of 8% I couldn't believe it. I mean cmon people. You're gonna tell me that you sat through this movie watching pretty sick baseball scenes, fat jokes galore, Freddie Prinze switching in and out of accents, and Jessica Biel coming out of a pool in slo-mo and was not entertained? I refuse to believe that and officially disown those who contributed to the 8% score. Also, shout out to my girl Didi for breaking Bru's slump See more Jul 12, 2021 About as cheesy as it gets lol . Like a hallmark movie with a baseball theme in the background. Has a heart and couple of chuckles :) as a baseball fan (and Jessica Beil may have been the best part :) See more Jun 29, 2021 There are funny lines that are laughably triggering with recognized comedic energy alongside a predated dynamic as the film's main selling point and rare ideologically delivered occasions of points across, but the strategic play in between two genres of sports and romance becomes simply predictable in repetitive buildup questionably unexplained threads.
