Critics Consensus

The Age of Adaline ruminates on mortality less compellingly than similarly themed films, but is set apart by memorable performances from Blake Lively and Harrison Ford.

Adaline’s story captivated me, heart and soul, her long journey to love’s doorstep a timeless sojourn I was glad to be a part of. Go to Full Review

The unhurried storytelling matches Adaline's endless life, making this a respectable date movie. Go to Full Review

Like Adaline, the film gives the sense of being somewhat uncomfortable in 2015, but while the movie makes a case for romanticizing the past, Adaline's story shows the limitations of detaching yourself from the present. Go to Full Review

The Age of Adaline is a solid film, well-acted and shot with sobriety and style...that instead of leaning into the magical realism at its core,...plays it safe as a romantic drama...[Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Despite a cold and off-putting third-person narration, Adaline is a film that eventually will melt the most of cynical of cinemagoers' hearts. Go to Full Review

Shaun D @Sheva10 3d Here is where I'm different. I don't read previews or watch trailers. I watched this without having any clue on what was about to unfold. In some ways it's a good thing and others, not so much. It was great not knowing what I was seeing, but on the other hand, this really rocked me to my absolute core. It was cool how it was set in the past and San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge was fantastic to see in it's early years. This movie made very emotional; from the half way point right until I was an absolute mess at the end. I found the plot so sad, on two occasions I thought it was predictable, but there were other moments where I was in gasp. This film really captivated me, but I think my experience is rare, because once you know the truth, you can't go back. I never want to watch it again, because I felt genuinely sad, but I give it a high rating, because it caused me such high degree of emotion and was well played. I enjoyed Harrison Ford's character he was great in this. See more Matthew T @Mattonio76 4d The Age of Adaline is a bland romance wrapped inside what could have been a clever sci-fi fantasy. The core issue is the delivery—it feels like a paint-by-numbers narrative, made interesting only by the possibilities it never fully explores. That said, it’s not a bad film, and it does have its charms. Unfortunately, Adaline’s plight is presented with such persistent melancholy that it overshadows any sense of wonder the premise hints at. Ironically, the most whimsical element of the fantasy may be the omniscient narrator explaining it all. To its credit, the film does stick the landing, avoiding over-the-top schmaltz in favor of a more honest, sincere reflection on love and life. This is one of those movies that always looked intriguing in the trailers, yet felt destined to disappoint. I wasn’t wrong—but it’s fine, and it still ranks above much of the disposable romance fare released these days. I would watch again See more Logan F. @RedBull Aug 10 Wonderful movie, slightly cheesy with the scientific explanations but would watch again. See more Clayton U Aug 1 Beautiful storyline. I love that it takes place in San Francisco and you get some history as well. Well acted and very believable. The part about the stock market algorithm developed from a weather algorithm is spot on as a friend actually is a stock market algorithm architect. Excellent ending to a wonderful story. One of our favorite movies of all-time! See more Read all reviews
