In the 1920s, actor George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a bona fide matinée idol with many adoring fans. While working on his latest film, George finds himself falling in love with an ingénue named Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) and, what's more, it seems Peppy feels the same way. But George is reluctant to cheat on his wife with the beautiful young actress. The growing popularity of sound in movies further separates the potential lovers, as George's career begins to fade while Peppy's star rises.

Critics Consensus

A crowd-pleasing tribute to the magic of silent cinema, The Artist is a clever, joyous film with delightful performances and visual style to spare.

The fiction, ultimately, is the thing. The Artist, in the best possible sense, is more of a movie than a film. It's played for laughs and tears; it switches from action to tenderness; it's got a really funny dog.

Michel Hazanavicius' black-and-white, mostly silent comedy The Artist is a gorgeously made curiosity -- a film that functions as a testament to its own obsession with other movies.

It isn’t easy to get modern audiences to engage with a film that looks like it was made a century prior. Yet, that’s precisely what director Michel Hazanavicius manages to do.

The Artist, as cute and charming as it was when it came out, falls into the severely niche category a decade later.

It’s the opposite of everything that sells at the box office today, and it’s a pure delight from start to finish.

It’s unique, the soundtrack is gorgeous, and I found my cheeks tired from smiling so much throughout the 95 min runtime. For anyone who’s watched any silent film before, this movie will truly shine. A genuine love letter to 1920-30s cinema

Wonderful homage to silent films: a cinematic masterpiece with charm and wit. Fabulous production design and score, as well as a great acting duo of Dujardin and Bejo!!!

“The Artist “ I found this movie which is a movie that came out in 2011 as a silent movie done in black and white to be quite good. A lot of the actors that I did not know in this film with the exception of John Goodman. But the sign up film was done very well easy to follow along with the storyline love the little doggie in the picture he kind of stole the show a lot in my opinion. This is a story of love and opportunity and life. Even though this film was done in black and white the cinematography is done very well. HD quality indeed even though it is in black and white this is something different that hasn't been done in many years. But very well done and I recommend this film to all those who remember the glory days of silent films.
