Critics Consensus

The Hateful Eight offers another well-aimed round from Quentin Tarantino's signature blend of action, humor, and over-the-top violence -- all while demonstrating an even stronger grip on his filmmaking craft.

The Hateful Eight may really be sort of terrible.

While it's not his best film (it's far too long and indulgent at times), Tarantino absorbs the audience into a scene, compelling you to look at each and every inch of it--indicative of many vintage films (his usual film playground).

The Hateful Eight often feels more like a sadistic stage play than a movie. [Full review in Japanese]

The tension simmers perfectly through the whole film, even after what appears to be the occasional reprieve, and with a cast at the top of their game, and direction that never feels like it's distracting from the core excitement.

Tarantino's newest film doesn't know when to quit. It just goes and dies, literally and figuratively.

When looking at Tarantino's filmography, The Hateful Eight doesn't hold a candle to works like 'Pulp Fiction' or 'Kill Bill,' but it's an entertaining film nonetheless — if you don't mind the runtime.

I am not a fan of this movie. Easily the worst Tarantino film of all-time!

While this is not Tarantino's best film by a long stretch, the performances by Samuel Jackson, in particular & the rest of this stellar cast make it well worth your time. Jackson is a great actor, who Tarantino has given his best roles. Madsen, Roth, Dern & the rest of the cast are all terrific! The bloodshed may be a bit over the top but unless you're squeamish I dn't think you will mind. W/. the limited setting change, near all of the action takes place in one cabin room--Millie's Haberdashery this could be done as a stage play. I most likely will not return to this one, but you should watch it. The hanging of the female antagonist @ the end is a gas!

If you try saying this movie is good, you're either an idiot or a liar. It's just more self-indulgent Tarantino bullshit with a bunch of n-words thrown in to shock you awake. What a loser.

Ennio Morricone is behind the rarely present music, and the legend eventually earned a Best Original Score Oscar. Unfortunately this alone does not make a good western, basically thanks to a suspected cast portraying more or less pathetic characters, in what turns out to be a long and not very interesting or thrilling move against another director signature ending. Overacting and logical flaws is the norm.
