Dave K @BilboBagsy Jul 4 Even though it’s not based on any sort of real or historical events. It’s an extremely powerful film that gives a voice to the nameless individuals that devoted their lives to raising multiple generations of White American children. It gives you a perspective that you wouldn't get to experience today. It makes you think about how a specific race of people in America worked six days a week, barely spent time being able to raise their own children and never had time for their own families. It reminds me that not only did African American maids raise other people's children, but that they did it with the same care, respect and love they would have shown their own children. An inspiring story and a powerful message showing the unbelievable strength of black communities and what they had to face everyday in order to get the freedom they undoubtedly deserved. Set in 1960s Mississippi, it tells the story of brave women pushing back against racial injustice, and it's full of moments that'll make you laugh, cry, and maybe even cheer. The standout performances are what really make this movie shine. Viola Davis as Aibileen is just incredible-her quiet strength and dignity steal every scene she's in. Octavia Spencer brings humor and heart as Minny, and Emma Stone's character, Skeeter, is a great example of how one person can use their privilege to make a difference. Bryce Dallas Howard as the nasty, manipulative Hilly Holbrook is so convincing you'll love to hate her. The movie balances heavy themes like racism and inequality with lighter moments, which keeps it from feeling overwhelming. That said, it's still a powerful story that shines a spotlight on voices that often go unheard.
