On a remote Scottish isle, siblings Isla and Sandy spend their days hunting seabirds and retelling the stories of their ancestors. They follow the strict rules inherited from their late father -- protect the island, allow no incomer, survive -- until one day, Daniel, an awkward and socially inept council official, arrives to evacuate them. Bringing with him the strange mainland ways of laws, paperwork, veganism and internet wizardry, he turns their world upside down. As long-held beliefs begin to crumble, each of them must confront the truth, embrace change, and dare to imagine a life beyond the island while fighting to preserve the heritage they have sworn to defend.

Critics Consensus

The Incomer's inviting performances and quirky edge make it a refreshingly good-natured character study of human connection.

All in all, it’s light, fun, and always watchable, thanks to the crackling chemistry among the leads and the magnificent scenery.

Those able to march to The Incomer‘s eccentric beat will find plenty of light, odd comedy, even when the culture clash gets heated.

Gleeson, Rankin and O’Rourke all have screen presence to burn. And as it goes with more than a few movies set in Scotland, the scenery is gorgeous even when other elements feel strained.

It’s weird, but it’s funny. Imagine 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple crossed with the The Whicker Man, and made into a heartfelt comedy.

This is wickedly funny and so off-the-wall with oddities that I was laughing out loud. From the very opening scene, we’re informed as to the tone and angle of the film… it’s got heart, but a very strange beat… and that doesn’t make it any less lovable.

This is not the type of film I typically gravitate towards, and I can’t say that this one changed that for me, but I did find some enjoyment from it. It’s quirky, absurd, but wholesome at times. I preferred when things were more wholesome than quirky. It’s a simple story with a small cast, and I was relieved that I liked the characters. Although I wasn’t in love with the overall premise and the strangeness that ensued, I found myself caring for the main trio of characters. I was also super supportive of the budding romance between our “Incomer” and the islander. Gleeson and Rankin had a strong chemistry and, although it’s a tale as old as time, I thought it was the most grounded part of the film. On that note, I did like how this film took the more realistic route with its ending. I thought it complemented the on-island craziness well. If you like the vibes and humor of ‘Swiss Army Man’ or films that are a bit cartoonish in nature, you might really enjoy this. Aside from it not being

"The Incomer" is one of this year's pleasant surprises, a wonderfully weird & often creepy fairy tale-like comedy. Louis Paxton has crafted a heartfelt, compelling story filled with humorous dialogue & outstanding performances from Gayle Rankin, Grant O’Rourke & Domhnall Gleeson.

This is a fantastic movie filled with eccentric and quirky characters brilliantly played by the actors. Very similar in tone to "The Ballad of Wallis Island." A story of human interaction filled with emotion, discovery and pathos. And if that wasn't enough, it's also laugh out loud funny! It will restore your faith in mankind ... and who doesn't need that these days?!?!

It's a good story and an entertaining watch with some humour. There are a couple of implausibilities, but then it is a film and provides some escape from the daily routine.
